In front of the walnut tree (with a girth of 259cm, circa 102 inches), a monument to the memory of General Lafayette was erected around 1934. He was a high-ranking military officer, a monarchist and a republican. He became a symbol of Liberty because he was constantly pleading the cause of a more equalitarian society. La Fayette is a forefather of Prince Philippe of Belgium, on his mother’s side, Queen Paola.
