On the car park you can see a block of Saint-Remy marble.
Up until the French Revolution (1789-1799), the Saint-Remy quarry (now a listed site, access strictly forbidden) produced several types of marble of the finest quality:
• The Saint-Remy blue marble: the most popular and abundant marble, mainly used for mantelpieces and building columns. The prevailing colour of this marble is grey.
• The griotte marble : is a cherry red marble, with no veining, with white specks, used for the same type of constructions as the blue marble;
• The royal marble: a very solid marble which is a combination of red and grey tints, with a lovely deep red colouring;
• Saint-Remy red: the red colouring is more distinctive and darker than in the royal marble. The Saint-Remy marble has a large, neat pattern, with a deep and varied colouring. The marble is extremely decorative.
