The Contemplative Order of the Carmel originated in the 12th century on Mount Carmel in Israel and then spread rapidly throughout Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, pressurized by the anticlerical laws, the Carmelite community from Amiens (France) decided to seek refuge in Rochefort. The convent sisters try to live in the wake of Jesus Christ and follow his teachings. The contemplative order respects a number of rules, among which devotion to Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
