You are now in the Rue Jacquet, the oldest street in Rochefort’s Old Town that was once encircled by ramparts fitted with two entrance portals. The high portal was located on the edge of the Place Lafayette.
While walking through the Rue Jacquet, you can admire on both sides, the doorsteps, window sills and lower sections in stone. On the left, at number 98 you can admire superbly crafted limestone elements. Number 96, built in dressed stone, forms a harmonious whole with its neighbor. Number 77 boasts a facade made with stone contours and brickwork. At the bend in the road, number 26 has a round, central portal; the keystone bears the arms of Bishop Jacquet (two crossed oak twigs). The house's interior has been embellished with Saint-Remy marble. Some years ago, the facade was sandblasted to remove the layer of quicklime that covered the facade. Quicklime was also used to dowse corpses and prevent the pest epidemic from spreading.
