Along this circuit, you will notice on several occasions that the area is characterised by knolls emerging from the otherwise flat landscape; these are locally known as “les Tiennes” (Walloon for hill). This is the typical landscape of the Calestienne. The “Tiennes” are the result of several hundreds of millions of years of shaping by the sea, folding of the Earth’s surface, periods of extreme cold and warming. Water has infiltrated and carved out the caves of Han, Rochefort, Hotton, Remouchamps, and all the small caves that can only be explored by speleologists.
