The origins of Celles go back to the second century when its inhabitants adored the Roman god Neptune. During the seventh century the district was evangelized by Saint-Hadelin who founded a monastery in the village. At his death in 690, his companions put his mortal remains in a reliquary, which was then walled into what is currently the church's crypt. In 1337, fed up of being harassed by the Lords of Celles, the monks leave the village and take refuge in Visé near Li��ge, taking the relics of the Saint with them. Even now, the villagers are very much attached to their patron saint and celebrate his festival on the third day of February.
