Sleeping Beauty’s Castle…an enchanting castle steeped in history.
The Castle of Vêves proudly towers above the picturesque village of Celles. It is shaped like a pentagon and is flanked by five elegant pepper pot towers.
It is the most typical example of military architecture in fifteenth century in Belgium. According to tradition, its origins go back to Pépin de Herstal (685). The castle was destroyed by the Normans in 1200 and; in 1230, and a veritable fortress was erected on the site. Successive restorations during the Renaissance period concentrated on transfiguring the interior, as you can tell from the rather stunning balcony that runs along the inner courtyard balcony. The north side is crowned by a magnificent lantern, which contains a very old clock. The chapel was destroyed during the German occupation of 1914-1918.
