This beautiful stone Stations of the Cross links the village centre to the Hermitage, and was used by the nuns of Saint-Vincent of Paul. This sisterhood settled in the Hermitage from 1858 onwards and until 1973. The sisters were wont to go to church 2 to 3 times a day for their devotions, and it was their habit to pray while going down the Stations of the Cross.
The “hermitage” chapel was built on the location of Saint Hadelin’s sepulchre and near the cave in which he withdrew from the world. Up until 1789, the hermits serving the church of Celles lived at the hermitage, which dates from the 14th century. In the middle of the court, a stone statue represents Saint Hadelin with a big beard, a dove on his left shoulder and his staff in his right hand.
