Belgium beer brews are famous the world over... and this is also true as far as the Bruges brews are concerned. All through the centuries, there were always a few traditional, small breweries in, or near, Bruges. The number of breweries in Bruges increased tremendously in the second half of the 19th century: from 18 in 1851 up to 28 in 1898! But, nowadays, only very few of them are still active.
'Brouwerij De Halve Maan' (Brewery of the Half-Moon) was created in 1564 already: it is without any doubt the oldest brewery in town. Two distinct beer are produced here: the 'Brugse Zot' (Bruges Fool) and the 'Straffe Hendrik' (Henry the Terrific). The high-fermentation beer are based on hop, malt and a special yeast... and they are rather strong ones indeed! The brewery can be visited (advance booking is compulsory for guided tours, however - www.halvemaan.be). You learn everything about the products of the brewery, as well as about the art of serving and enjoying beer. From the upper level of the brewery buildings, you can enjoy a nice sight on Bruges. Near the brewery, you also find a pleasant brasserie where traditional Belgian dishes with a contemporary twist are served (you can sit outside on the pleasant terrace or inside near the fireplace, depending on your preference... or the weather conditions!).
