The 'Balstraat' is a narrow picturesque street flanked by little labourer houses, where you will find unexpected cultural and historical treasures...
Volkskundemuseum (Arts & Traditions Museum)
In the street you find the 'Volkskundemuseum' (Arts & Traditions Museum), an unusual museum hosted in a row of one-room houses dating back to the 17th century, and which were completely refurbished and turned into showcases of authentic traditional craftsmen of the time (hat-maker, chemist, sugar baker, a school class, a typical sleeping room...). In the museum you are introduced to the life of the common people in the middle ages. On the upper level there is also a collection of lace works. In 'De Zwarte Kat' (Black Kat) inn you can relax and enjoy a drink, while at the same time try your luck at traditional folk games. You also find a garden space at the 'Volkskundemuseum', which is a true green oasis of peace. Opening times (museum and inn): Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30 a.m. < 5.00 p.m. (last entry at 4.30 p.m.).
Kantcentrum (Lace Centre)
The 'Kantcentrum' (Lace Centre) is hosted at the former, restored Lace School ('Kantschool') of the Apostoline Sisters. Besides the Lace Museum at the lower level, with a multimedia exhibition depicting the history of the lace industry in Bruges, you also find a lace workshop at the upper level, where numerous performances and trainings are held. Opening times: daily, 9.30 a.m. < 5.00 p.m.
