At the other side of the bridge, you can see a typical tower construction. The 'Poedertoren', a construction towering at some 18 m above the water at the end of a narrow foot bridge, was constructed in 1401. It is one of the very few remains from the defence line erected in the middle ages around Bruges. During the 'Ancien Regime' (French rule), it was used as a storage place for the town's gunpowder.
Proceed now along the green alley between the 'Begijnhof' wall and the canal, to get back to the old town and 'Oud Sint-Janshospitaal' (Former Saint-John's Hospital).
