A few of the houses in the tiny hamlet of Borgoumont are characterized by the typical walls, a feature that is found in most villages in the area. The outer walls of half-timbered houses are supported by an assemblage of timber, between which a construction material (in past times, this used to be hay or straw) is filled-in. The external side is then coated with plaster.
Half-timbered houses can be found in many areas in Europe, often with local variations in the pattern. The aesthetic beauty of such houses is obvious, but the intricate building technique, as well as the permanent maintenance which is needed, are such that the technique has been almost completely abandoned for a long time now.
