The site of Coo Waterfall (or, better said, Coo Waterfalls, as there are actually two falls very close to each other), on the River Amblève, has obviously become one of the most popular tourism spots in the Ardenne Region.
Historical sources tend to prove that the ''small'' waterfall, which is of a natural origin, already existed in the 15th century. The ''main'' fall is much better known, as being the highest fall in all of Belgium. It was created in the course of the 18th century by the monks of Stavelot Abbey who cut off a large meander of the river by creating an opening on the rocky bank of the river, this with the aim of protecting the village of Petit-Coo from recurrent floods. The fall is 15 m high, and can be viewed either from above (from the bridge) or through the staircase leading down to its base.
