The forest you will are now walking through is a Natura 2000 site referred to as the “Famenne between Eprave and Havrenne”. This is an ensemble typical of the Famenne that includes an important wooded massif established on a soil of clay and schist, as well as grasslands, notably in the Behotte plain. The patchwork fields are quite remarkable:
many hedges and drains filled with water and high-quality hay meadows, on a predominantly calcareous soil, perfectly suited for some remarkable orchid varieties.
The Natura 2000 programme, which is run on a European scale according to norms specific to each member state, aims to preserve certain species as well as their natural habitat which allows them to develop harmoniously. The province of Namur counts a total of 50,836 hectares of Natura 2000 sites of the 220,945 hectares in all of Wallonia. With 7,398 hectares, Rochefort is the district of Wallonia with the biggest surface area occupied by Natura 2000 sites.
