Go through the tourniquet to access the memorial.
This memorial was built on the site of the now long-vanished village of Falen, which lay between the abbey and Havrenne. Albert Renard, a sculptor from Rochefort, engraved the following lines into a block of stone, lines which briefly retrace the history of this sanctuary:
“It all started with a Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Remy. The sanctuary gave its name to the wooded valley where a Cistercian abbey was founded in 1230. After being pillaged and devastated, the chapel was demolished in 1660. In 1979, the monks of Saint Remy uncovered the vestiges of the buildings. In 1980, this memorial bears witness to a past steeped in history.”
