The forest you will cross is typical of the Famenne, a vast natural depression inserted between the Condroz and the Ardennes.
It reaches an altitude of about 150 metres, while the neighbouring plateau of the Condroz rises to 300 metres. The Famenne is covered with forests, mostly oak and hornbeam, often at lower altitudes and where there is more humidity. Grasslands occupy the heavier soils. The Famenne is bordered in the southeast by the Calestienne, which is sometimes incorrectly considered a sub-region of the Famenne. Yet the origin and the age of their soils are totally different: the Famenne is made up mostly of schist while the Calestienne is composed of limestone. There are nevertheless many resinous trees in the region, as it is close to the Ardennes, where their exploitation plays an important economic role.
