The Ecomuseum is located in the buildings of the Ferme-Château de Treignes (Treignes Castle-Farm). At the heart of the village, it constitutes a remarkable architectural group. Its buildings sum up the region's eventful history since its foundation in the 16th century. It is known as a Castle-Farm due to its having been the residence of a minor aristocrat, representing the lord's authority in the village.
The Ecomuseum was founded in 1982 by the ULB with two aims: to save one of the village's flagship buildings, which was destined for demolition, and to promote and make available to the public the regional ethnographic collections gathered together by the University and the non-profit organisation DIRE.
The Ecomuseum thus favours a technological approach to humanity's relationship with its environment, tools and techniques being the ways that humans have mastered materials and made use of the area's resources.
