The Bois de la Saute (Saute Wood) still conceals many mysteries. This wood was apparently surrounded by a wall whose remains can still be seen. Circular piles of stones are also to be found there. Several interpretations have been suggested. One of these, in the absence of archaeological excavations, presents the "Saudée" district as a place where plague sufferers were kept together. Indeed, the plague hit the region hard between 1630 and 1640, and it appears that sick people from Mazée were kept in this district. The worship of Saint Roch is closely linked to this terrible calamity. This whole district is then said to have been burnt down by the French armies.
