The walk starts at the spot known as "Cendron", where the clear, rushing water of the Wartoise
is ideal for rainbow and fario trout farming, the highly prized main ingredient in
making trout escavèche. This is where the American troops entered Belgium on 2 September 1944 and began to liberate the country. The monument erected is a reminder of this event and a
memorial festival celebrates the anniversary each year.
Several forges opened in Forge-Philippe since the forgemasters found the three essential elements they needed to operate there: ore, water for power and washing;
and charcoal for fuel. On Rue de la Distillerie, you can see the Ferme de la Distillerie (Distillery Farm). This is where wood alcohol
(methylated spirits) was produced. This alcohol was made from second-class cleared wood. It was reduced to shavings and macerated in huge wells. Alcohol was then extracted and the tannin was recovered. The forge now known as "Vieux Gaucher" was operated by one of the Poshets: Gaulchier.
