Activities such as beer-making, which were originally purely monastic, gradually entered the ordinary economic cycle and created many jobs at a series of businesses that were separate from the abbey. Thus, its grassland farm and the Auberge de Poteaupré inn are part of a cooperative. The cheese was ripened at
the abbey but is now made by an external dairy. Chimay's famous Trappist beer is brewed at the Monastery but bottled and marketed in Baileux by a cooperative.
