At the boundary between Calestienne and Fagne, the Etang de Virelles (Virelles Lake) is one of the biggest humid areas in Wallonia (116 hectares). In fact it is an artificial lake
created in the 16th century to serve the local metallurgy industry. A simple
dyke built across the Ry Nicolas Valley was all it took to form this vast expanse of water, which has a maximum depth of around 2 metres.
