La Baraque Michel is close to Belgium's highest point (694m), the starting point for many walks in the Hautes Fagnes nature reserve. La Baraque Michel is on your right. Its origins date back to the 18th century. Michel Schmitz from Sinzig in the Rhineland settled in Herbiester near Jalhay. Often wandering in the Fagne, he almost lost his way one foggy day. Having found his way again at nightfall, after giving thanks to the Virgin, he planted his staff there and promised to build a hut and devote the rest of his life to rescuing lost travellers. This he did from 1808 until his death
in 1819.
