After the fighting in Rossignol, the French Colonial Corps rapidly retreated, closely pursued by the forces of the German 6th Corps. In order to cover the retreat of its units, a rear guard was positioned for ambush in the village of Olizy-sur-Chiers, which opened fire on the enemy, causing
the latter to suffer heavy losses.
