On 25 August 1914, the French Colonial Corps stationed a rear guard along the river Chiers between Malandry (Ardennes) and Nepvant, in order to cover its retreat and protect the bridges of Martincourt, as well a s those of Inor. The enemy crossed the river at La Ferté-sur-Chiers (Ardennes), which hastened the retreat of this rear guard.
