Before leaving the Citadel of Montmédy for Verdun, Lieutenant-Colonel Faurès ordered the destruction of the bridge over the river Chiers and the railway tunnel.
The bridges in Chauvency-le-Château, Chauvency-Saint-Hubert and Vigneul were destroyed by the 2nd Corps. The viaduct in
Thonne-les-Prés was left unharmed.
