After the strategic retreat of the French troops coming from
Belgium, the Citadel of Montmédy found itself isolated. On 27 August 1914, the garrison received the order to join the French army at Verdun. It set up a temporary base at Fontaine Saint-Dagobert on 28 August, before facing the enemy in Brandeville on 29 August.
