The perron of Theux was erected in 1457 and is the symbol of municipal freedom. The cross on top represents religious authority while the column - the "stone of justice" - represents civil power. The pine cone located between the two remains an enigma; it is thought to be a pagan symbol representing fertility and prosperity.
