Around 1000, there has been a profound revival of Christianity. Hildegard wife of lord Archaic, Maynard the Rich, had undertaken the construction of a magnificent church and priory.
Petronilla, their daughter, married Geoffrey Taillefer, Count of Angouleme.
Geoffroy and Petronilla fearing the end of the world, gave in 1025 the Saint Paul church of Bouteville and its priory to the Abbey of Savigny, of the order of St. Benedict, order that was promising peace to the worried consciences.
Petronilla, died around 1027, was buried under the threshold of the church and on the tombstone is engraved her epitaph still legible: "Hic jacet Ancilla Domini christi Petronilla", Here lies Petronilla the servant of Christ our Lord.
