The Grand Prince (1808-1886). Prince Joseph, 16th Prince of Chimay and later first Prince of Caraman. He was
known as the Grand Prince (meaning "Tall" or "Great Prince"), because of his imposing height, as well as for his kindness,
generosity, amiability, works and achievements. He had a real passion
for his town of Chimay and, despite his many preoccupations, he was committed to improving it. He built the new hospice, the Ecole des Frères school, the municipal college, the Princes monument, the Froissart monument and the new cemetery, and created the Boulevard Louise. He also promoted the Abbey of La Trappe, the distribution of water and gas,
the railway from Chimay to Mariembourg and the new castle theatre. He was also
interested in local and regional industry and was the last of the region's forgemasters.
