The village of Bourlers was created when Gilles de Chimay decided to make the most of his land, in the second half of the 12th century, more specifically in 1166. Monks from
the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Michel (Saint Michael) in Thiérache answered his call and cleared the seigneurial forest so the population could settle in these newly conquered lands. The monks left permanently in 1795 with the sale of the last farm.
