The viewpoints over the lake are worth the trip. It is interesting to note that from a scientific point of view, the estate is divided into 3 areas, according to the natural environments and accessibility to the public:
- the integral reserve, where there is no human intervention, as the environments evolve naturally.
- the directed nature reserve, where work is carried out to maintain the environments at a particular stage.
- the park, accessible to the public.
Guided tours are organised at the Aquascope in Virelles. They provide a chance to explore part of the directed nature reserve, which is sure to delight nature-lovers.
The reputation of the Etang de Virelles (Virelles Lake) is due to the presence of several rare species at the regional and national level. These include the Great Crested Grebe, Eurasian Teal, Western Marsh Harrier, Water Rail and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. The Eurasian Hobby, Kite and Kingfisher live in the surrounding area and regularly visit the site.
The hundred or so species spotted at Virelles include the Great Cormorant, Osprey, Eurasian Reed Warbler and Common Reed Bunting.
