The seigneury of Vierves, which became a barony in the 15th century, was part of the principality of Liège, after belonging to Namur, and encompassed Matagne la Grande, Le Mesnil, Treignes and Vierves. The barons of Hamal de Vierves (from 1567) were a very powerful family, grand bailiffs of the Entre Sambre & Meuse, a municipality in the Ardennes department under the French regime, transferred to the province of Namur in 1815. The feudal castle played an important military role until the 17th century. Burnt down circa 1762, then rebuilt as it appears today, this castle, a reminder of the lords of Vierves, overlooks the village and the valley of Viroin.
