From the 15th century to the mid-19th century, Virelles saw thriving business activity thanks to the iron industry. The Virelles forge (also known as Forge du Déversoir) occupied
15 workers. The old Maka, a kind of large hammer that was once the centrepiece of the forges, still lies under the debris. The facilities located behind the
building are designed to gather and store fish while the Etang de Virelles lake is being emptied (emptying takes place every 2 years). The lake has a remarkable history, which we
invite you to come and discover on a guided tour.
